The Affordable Care Act (also known as “Obama Care”)

What is “The Affordable Care Act”?:

The Affordable Care Act is the official name for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act which was signed into law on March 23, 2010. The Affordable Care Acts health reform does a number of important things including offering Americans a number of new benefits, rights, and protections in regards to their healthcare and setting up a Health Insurance Marketplace where Americans can purchase federally regulated and subsidized health insurance.

MEDICAID MANAGED CARE IN SUFFOLK COUNTY

Choosing a managed care plan that meets the health care needs of you and your family is an important decision. The chart below will help you make that decision. It has information about the quality of care offered by the different plans, and people’s opinions about the care and services the plans provide.

There are things you need to think about. Is your doctor in the plan? How close is the doctor’s office to your home? Does the plan have special services that you and your family need?

Talk with friends, your doctor and your Suffolk County Navigator or Certified Application Counselor before making a decision. Ask questions to make sure you know what each plan offers.

The New York State of Health Market Place is another resource for learning about available New York State managed care plans. Through this website you can compare health plan options, apply for financial assistance, and find resources to help you understand your options and enroll in coverage.

A Managed Care Plan includes:

  • A regular doctor. This person is your Primary Care Provider
  • Regular Check-ups
  • No limit on the number of visits you or your children can have with your doctor.
  • You can access clinics, laboratories, specialists and hospitals.
  • Benefits that are the same as regular Medicaid.
